Our guide to Tayside’s popular DD5 postcode, where properties sell nearly as quickly as Taylor Swift tickets.

Broughty Ferry is one of the crown jewels of Tayside, with property here retaining its popularity year in, year out. Once upon a time, the Ferry was seen as the place that everyone around Tayside wanted to retire to; nowadays people of all ages are clamouring to move to this thriving area.

There are many reasons for Broughty Ferry’s perennial appeal and vibrant property market. There’s the long sandy beach of course, with the castle and esplanade, great for families, dog owners and anyone else who wants some fresh air and great coastal views.

Commuting and schools

Then there are the excellent transport links–one reason why the Ferry has become so popular as a commuting town. The A90 offers easy access to Aberdeen, Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and Broughty Ferry rail station is on the Dundee mainline, with regular services going north and south. There’s also Dundee’s airport, for flights to Heathrow, Belfast City and Sumburgh.

Another draw for families is good local schools, at both primary and secondary level, including the near by independent High School of Dundee. Meanwhile, golfers have St Andrews and Carnoustie close at hand, while foodies have a growing choice of options, not just the legendary Visocchi’s which has been there since the 1950s or the well-known Fisherman’s Tavern, but newer cafes and independent shops like the Selkie Broughty Ferry and Clementines.

The property mix

So, we’ve now told you several reasons why people are queueing up to buy property in the Ferry, but what about the property available herein the sought-after DD5 postcode?

The mix here is varied, with something for everyone–from a good choice of flats in the town centre, to modern family homes with three or four bedroom or space for a home office, to stone-built villas. Moving further out of the town but still in the DD5 postcode, it’s possible to buy more rural properties with bigger gardens and more space.

Recent sales

The popularity of the Ferry means that, even in 2023 when the property market has slightly quietened, this is a seller’s market. Demand exceeds supply and sale times can be swift, with our recent sales including a four-bedroom modern family home that sold just two days after coming onto the market and a stone-built villa with original features that had six offers at its closing date, just 10 days after it went on sale.
