Location, location, location are buzz words we are all very familiar with but what happens when we’ve completed our search, secured the house of our dreams and the moving date is drawing near? Panic, might be your first thought but actually preparation is the key.
Preparation, preparation, preparation.
Here are some tips to help consider everything you need to make the actual move as hassle-free as possible.
We’re moving!
Make a list of all those people who you need to advise that you are moving i.e. banks, the doctor, dentist etc. and then give them plenty of notice, preferably in writing.
Budget
There are numerous costs involved with moving so budgeting to ensure you cover the costs will help reduce stress. It is important to get estimates from removal firms or for hiring a van to get the best price for the service you require.
Pace yourself
Most people underestimate the amount of furniture and personal belongings requiring to be moved, partly because many of us have fitted wardrobes and integrated appliances in the kitchen. However, the reality is, on occasion, a bit overwhelming! Start much sooner than you think you need to and take it a room at a time. Decide what items are definitely not going to the new house and discard, then box and label as much as possible.
Be flexible
On moving day, there will be many people involved so be flexible and if delays or obstacles to your original plan occur, have a list of tasks for the day and re-order and re-assign to keep things moving. Let friends and family know when you’ll need their help, and if using professional removers make sure everyone is clear about what is expected and when.
Labelling is essential
Clear labels on everything before moving day will mean less to do on the day and the removers know exactly which boxes are going into which room, resulting in efficient unpacking, particularly if you are relying on friends and family.
Survival kit
Having some essentials for the day packed together and kept handy can make life a lot easier throughout a hectic day. Include items such as toiletries, phone chargers, bottles of water, juice or coffee/tea making provisions, snacks and medication. Keeping all the movers happy and refreshed will help maintain motivation. It may also be worth including some overnight items just in case there are any issues retrieving those items amongst the main move packing for that first night.
Important documents
A good idea is to store all important documents (passports, house deeds, will, and insurance papers, movers certificate of insurance) in one box or file and keep easily accessible but safe.
Avoid working with children and animals
It is advisable to arrange for your children or pets to be looked after elsewhere on moving day. You can get the children involved in unpacking their rooms the following day to help them settle and feel involved, but it is important that you can concentrate on co-ordinating the move without distractions. Pets too are better out of the chaos and can be introduced to their new neighbourhood after the move has happened.
Finally, when the beds made, the kitchen is sorted out and sofas in position(even if not much else is – that can be done later) it’s time for a celebratory and well-earned glass of fizz!
